Cartridge vs Passive Tips
Cartridge tips (T12/T15, C245/C210): Heater and temperature sensor integrated into each tip. Heat up in 5-8 seconds. Maintain temperature even on large ground planes. Change tips in seconds while hot. This is the modern standard.
Passive tips (900M series, Hakko 936-style): Tip slides over a ceramic heater. Slower heat-up (30-60s), worse thermal recovery. Cheaper tips. Obsolete for new purchases.
Power and Thermal Recovery
Wattage matters less than thermal recovery — how fast the station replenishes heat when you touch a joint. 65-75W: Fine for through-hole and most SMD work. 100-120W: Handles large ground planes, connectors, battery tabs without drooping. More power = faster recovery = better joints on difficult boards.
Temperature Control and Calibration
Digital temperature display with 1°C resolution. The iron should reach set temp in under 10 seconds from sleep. Sleep mode (auto cooldown when in the stand) extends tip life dramatically. Some stations let you calibrate tip offset — useful for precision work. Password lock keeps settings from wandering in a shared lab.
Tip Selection
Cartridge systems have dozens of tip geometries available. Chisel (D-type): Most versatile. Good for through-hole and SMD. Conical (I-type): Fine point for tiny SMD. Knife (K-type): Drag soldering, large contacts. Hoof/bevel (C-type): Excellent heat transfer for big joints. The station is only as good as the tips you have — budget for 3-5 tips.
Brand Tiers
Value Kings ($50-120): KSGER T12, Quicko T12, Aixun T3A. Chinese T12 cartridge stations. Shockingly good — direct-drive heating, genuine Hakko T12 tips work. The KSGER T12 is the Ender 3 of soldering.
Professional ($150-300 used): Hakko FX-951, Pace ADS200, Weller WE1010. Excellent thermal performance, tip longevity.
Top Tier ($300+): JBC (CD/DD series), Metcal (RF induction). Instant heat, unmatched thermal recovery. JBC is the industry benchmark.
